Artificial intelligence is suddenly everywhere. Fueled by huge technological advances in recent years and gobs of venture capitalist money, AI has become one of the hottest corporate buzzwords. Roughly 1 in 7 public companies mentioned "artificial intelligence" in their annual filings last year, according to a Washington Post analysis. But the term is fuzzy. "AI is purposefully ill-defined from a marketing perspective," said Alex Hanna, director of research at Distributed AI Research Institute.

What is Artificial Intelligence (AI)? There are many definitions of Artificial Intelligence (AI) but none of them effectively captures what AI is capable of. As such, I will not be defining AI, rather, I will be reporting the goal of AI as encapsulated at the 1956 Dartmouth Summer Project on Artificial Intelligence, where the science and technology of AI was properly born. 'To proceed on the basis of the conjecture that every aspect of learning or any other feature of intelligence can be so precisely described that a machine can be made to simulate it'[i] Although it has hardly been restated, this goal has the been the underlying drive behind every manifestation of AI since then. If it takes human intelligence and learning to get a thing done, then it can be replicated by a machine, once we break down the components of the particular intelligence and learning approach at play.

In 1990, a fellow chess player and I attended one of Gary Kasparov's several matches in New York City. Kasparov had become the youngest ever World Chess Champion in 1985, at the age of 22. In 1997, Kasparov also became the first World Chess Champion to be defeated by a computer, losing to IBM's Deep Blue in a stunning six-game match. Computers have become so good at chess that phones are now banned at chess tournaments, and players are very carefully monitored for any sort of digital activity or connection. Today, however, there is a new kind of chess becoming competitively dominant. Called "Advanced Chess," or more colloquially "Centaur Chess," it involves teaming human beings with computers, and it has been actively supported by Kasparov.

Twenty years ago IBM's Deep Blue computer stunned the world by becoming the first machine to beat a reigning world chess champion in a six-game match. The supercomputer's success against an incredulous Garry Kasparov sparked controversy over how a machine had managed to outmaneuver a grand master, and incited accusations--by Kasparov and others--that the company had cheated its way to victory. The reality of what transpired in the months and years leading up to that fateful match in May 1997, however, was actually more evolutionary than revolutionary--a Rocky Balboa–like rise filled with intellectual sparring matches, painstaking progress and a defeat in Philadelphia that ultimately set the stage for a triumphant rematch. Computer scientists had for decades viewed chess as a meter stick for artificial intelligence. Chess-playing calculators emerged in the late 1970s but it would be another decade before a team of Carnegie Mellon University graduate students built the first computer--called Deep Thought--to beat a grand master in a regular tournament game.

DeepMind, the London-based subsidiary of Alphabet, has created a system that can quickly master any game in the class that includes chess, Go, and Shogi, and do so without human guidance. The system, called AlphaZero, began its life last year by beating a DeepMind system that had been specialized just for Go. That earlier system had itself made history by beating one of the world's best Go players, but it needed human help to get through a months-long course of improvement. AlphaZero trained itself--in just 3 days. AlphaZero, playing White against Stockfish, began by identifying four candidate moves.

Garry Kasparov, a former Soviet world chess champion and one of the greatest players of all time, has changed his tune about AI since he was beaten by IBM's Deep Blue. During a talk at the Train AI conference in San Francisco on Thursday, Kasparov traced the steps that convinced him about how humans and machines might one day work together to create an "augmented intelligence". He's had a lot of time to contemplate the rise of machines. Over 20 years ago, at the height of his career as the world chess champion, he entered a competition to play chess against a supercomputer. "The day machines would beat the strongest human player had to be the dawn of AI. The machine that would succeed had to be intelligent," Kasparov said.

Deep Blue beat world chess champion Gary Kasparov in the final game of a tied, six-game match last May 11. Kasparov had beaten the machine in an earlier match held in February 1996. The Fredkin Prize was awarded under the auspices of AAAI; funds had been held in trust at Carnegie Mellon University. The Fredkin Prize was originally established at Carnegie Mellon University 17 years ago by Massachusetts Institute of Technology Computer Science Professor Edward Fredkin to encourage continued research progress in computer chess. The first award of $5,000 was given to two scientists from Bell Laboratories who in 1981 developed the first chess machine to achieve master status.
